Small spoilers for the book, but nothing major. And apologies for no review in March. I’ll be writing two for April to make up for it.
Book two of the Nocturnal series by Villimey Mist came out in January. After loving the first book, I grabbed this one when I could and devoured it. Originally, I got it on my kindle, but after seeing there were illustrations, I ordered a physical copy. The illustrations throughout the novel were a wonderful touch and something I personally haven’t seen done often. They’re so detailed and helped visualize what the characters looked like. After seeing both the digital and print version, they look better in the print version. The formatting on the digital was a little weird, but not terrible around the illustrations.
Book two starts off six months after the events of book one. During that time, Leia’s had time to deal with the trauma she experienced from book one as she searched for more information on the vampire world. She still has panic attacks and nightmares from what occurred, but she’s doing her best to move forward to protect her and her family.
The inciting incident featured a location change, though it’s not a road trip like book one. I enjoyed seeing Amsterdam through Leia’s eyes, bringing a nice charm with everything she saw. Leia is very endearing and I love having her as the main character. Speaking of characters, I enjoyed the new ones introduced: Eli and Adam. Eli reminded me of Michonne and I loved how badass she was. Adam was adorable. Having Kenji and Grigori come back, with a central focus this time, led to learning information on them and I loved it. Seeing Kenji interact with Leia and learning about his past brought a smile to my face. He’s still my favorite male character in this series.
The pacing, which was my main criticism of Nocturnal Blood, of book two improved over book one. I can’t remember a time where I felt like things were moving too quickly or dragging too slowly.
And that ending!
I did not see the final few pages coming and was thoroughly surprised by the twist. I don’t want to spoil it for those who may want to read it, but I am so excited to read the third book. If you love vampires and horror, I highly recommend this series.
I give it 5/5 blood bags.
