May Mini-Review: School Spirits

81llrxz7-lBook four of my reading challenge was Rachel Hawkin’s School Spirits, a side novel to her Hex Hall trilogy. I read the trilogy back when they first released from 2010 to 2012. I wish I read this closer to the trilogy, but it was a good stand-alone novel, aside from the ending. Despite it being a few years since I reread Hex Hall, I fell right back into this world with ease.

Isolde Brannick, Izzy, is a hunter for all things supernatural, nicknamed Prodigium in this universe. Upon her sister Finley disappearing from a run-in with a Witches Coven, Izzy has been off her game. When a haunting occurs at a high school a state away, Izzy and her mother move to investigate, having Izzy go undercover as a student to learn more.

Izzy’s interaction with her fellow students is very much “fish out of water,” and I loved the humor in her interactions. There was I think only one instance where I kinda cringed, but that was it. Otherwise, the humor was well placed and worked well. Izzy’s investigation of the ghost hunting the school was a fun adventure, leading her to join the school’s “Paranormal Management Society.” Each character was unique and a delight to read. Although, I laughed anytime Dex’s outfits were described because they sounded so ridiculous.

My only criticism is that the ending felt like a setup for another novel, yet since this was published in 2013, I doubt there’s going to be a sequel. There wasn’t much closure about Finley’s disappearance, leaving me wanting another book even more.

I still enjoyed it overall. 4.5/5 mirrors
