May Mini-Review: Wicked Fox

81kbs3tspwlWe have reached the last book of my May Reading Challenge. The fifth, and last, book was Wicked Fox by Kat Cho. This was the most recently published book on my list, coming out 2019. A companion book, Vicious Spirits, is slated to be released in August 2020. After the trip Wicked Fox took me on, I’m grabbing Vicious Spirts as soon as it comes out.

Wicked Fox follows 18 year-old Gu Miyoung, a gumiho, a Korean nine-tailed fox who consumes the gi of humans. She tends to go after men who have committed terrible deeds in their lifetime. After returning to Seoul, she runs into a human, Ahn Jihoon being attacked by a dokkaebi, a goblin. Breaking a rule set by her mother, Miyoung saves Jihoon, tying them together as they try to survive.

I absolutely loved this novel. It’s a dark, urban fantasy where the Korean folklore bleeds into the busy city of Seoul. Learning about different folklore creatures as the book explored them was amazing. I’m hoping to explore more in the second book set to come out this year.

The characters were beautifully flawed, showing a morally gray side to almost everyone. I loved Jihoon’s carefree nature, Changwan’s innocence, Somin’s ferocity to protect her friends, and Miyoung’s icy shell that melted to a girl longing for friends. The adult characters were fleshed out and I loved every scene that Jihoon’s Halmeoni was in. She’s a lovely character and her dynamic with Jihoon was lovely to see. Throughout the whole book, I just wanted to hug Miyoung and tell her everything was going to be okay. And her chemistry with Jihoon was a joy to read and see unfold.

Despite this book clocking in at over 400 pages, it didn’t read like that. It was hard for me to put it down, keeping me enthralled by each event that occurred. If you love fantasy, supernatural creatures, or thrilling dramas, I highly recommend Wicked Fox.

I give this 5/5 umbrellas.
